How much tip should I leave?

In North America, 15-18% is typical for lunch and 18-20% for dinner. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. Takeout usually warrants 10% or nothing. Tipping customs vary by country — in some places like Japan, tipping is not expected.

Should I calculate tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both approaches are acceptable, but the most common practice is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator uses whatever amount you enter as the base, so you can choose to enter either pre-tax or post-tax amounts.

How should tip be handled when splitting the bill?

The simplest method is to calculate the total including tip, then divide by the number of people. That's exactly what the "Per Person" amount shows. If some diners ordered more expensive items, you can also split proportionally.
