Percentage Calculator

Quickly calculate percentages, proportions, and rates of change with three common calculation modes.

Select Calculation Mode

Calculate a percentage of a given value

How to Use

This calculator offers three common percentage calculation modes. Click the buttons above to switch:

  • Y% of X
  • Proportion
  • Rate of Change

Enter the values and click "Calculate" to get the result. Click "Reset" to clear the inputs.

Formulas

Mode 1: Y% of X

Result = X × Y ÷ 100

Multiply value X by percentage Y and divide by 100 to get Y% of X.

Mode 2: Proportion (X is what % of Y)

Result = (X ÷ Y) × 100%

Divide partial value X by total value Y, then multiply by 100 to get the percentage. Note: Y cannot be zero.

Mode 3: Rate of Change (% change from X to Y)

Result = ((Y - X) ÷ |X|) × 100%

The difference between the new and original values, divided by the absolute value of the original, times 100. Positive means increase, negative means decrease. Original value cannot be zero.

Calculation Examples

Example 1: Y% of X

Question: What is 20% of 500?

Calculation: 500 × 20 ÷ 100 = 100

Example 2: Proportion

Question: 30 is what percent of 200?

Calculation: (30 ÷ 200) × 100 = 15%

Example 3: Rate of Change

Question: A product's price rose from 800 to 960. What is the increase?

Calculation: ((960 - 800) ÷ 800) × 100 = 20%

Important Notes

  • Percentage vs. percentage point:These are different concepts. For example, if an interest rate rises from 2% to 5%, that is a 3 percentage point increase, but a 150% increase in percentage terms ((5-2)/2 × 100%). The two are often confused in everyday language.
  • In proportion calculations, the total value (Y) cannot be zero, as the result would be undefined.
  • In rate of change calculations, the original value (X) cannot be zero, as the change cannot be measured.
  • Results are rounded to 4 decimal places. For higher precision, please use specialized tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between percentage and percentage point?

A percentage (%) is a ratio expressing one value relative to another. A percentage point is the absolute difference between two percentages. For example, if market share rises from 30% to 45%, that is a 15 percentage point increase, but a 50% increase in percentage terms ((45-30)/30 × 100%). Understanding this distinction is important when reading news and financial reports.

How do I calculate a discounted price?

Use the "Y% of X" mode. For example, if an item originally costs 1,200 and is 20% off (i.e., 80% of the original price), enter X = 1200 and Y = 80 to get 960. To find the discount amount (savings), enter Y = 20 (100% - 80% = 20%) to get 240.

Can the rate of change exceed 100%?

Yes. When the new value is more than double the original, the rate of change exceeds 100%. For example, going from 50 to 150 gives a rate of change of ((150-50)/50) × 100% = 200%, meaning it doubled. Similarly, a decrease can exceed 100% when the original value is negative (e.g., from -10 to 5).

What are some everyday applications of percentages?

Percentages are everywhere in daily life: store discounts (30% off = 70% of the original price), bank interest rates (2.5% annual), tax rates (5% sales tax), nutrition labels (% of daily recommended intake), test scores (85% correct), and investment returns (8% annualized). Mastering percentage calculations helps you make better decisions in shopping, personal finance, and health management.
